Salon Sofa
Design: Josef Hoffmann (2023)Based on a signed but undated Josef Hoffmann drawing, this design’s gentle forms are typical of his later work. A symbol of classic Viennese salon culture, exceptionally comfortable and lending itself to communicative scenarios, SALON clearly exhibits Hoffmann’s signature.
The SALON sofa and armchair are an expression of this late softness. The sweeping backrest and armrests generously envelop a slightly cambered seat. Towards the point where the pieces meet the ground, SALON’s stable, angular feet again show an increased tendency towards the cubic forms so often employed by Hoffmann. Wittmann ensures contemporary comfort with a multi-layered upholstered structure, comprising elastic webbing, the high-quality Wittmann spring core and a stable polymousse layer. As with all Hoffmann models, the classic lines found in the SALON series call for especially exacting execution of the individual design details, such as the precision stitching and immaculate piping, all implemented by Wittmann with characteristically masterful handcraftsmanship. As before, and certainly in the spirit of Hoffmann, SALON’s character best expresses itself in pared down architectural settings that give the models precisely the kind of stage they merit.
